PS5 vs PS4 Pro Fan Noise Video Eloquently Makes Its Point

I’ve only noticed my Pro making a huge noise in a few games. MediEvil was pretty bad for it and DOOM was crazy while loading but I’ve not really heard it much in recent games.

I have a surround sound system and sometimes my Pro drowns out the sound from the front speakers lol.

Don’t even think about playing Warzone from the PS4!! My Last of Us 2 edition revved like a jet for the 1st time

My PS4 Pro sounded like a 747 preparing for take off when I played Last of Us 2 and the Avengers beta.

Wait does the PS5 do the 3D audio with 7.1 surround sound? Because I would rather use my Home theater then headphones for single player games.

Honestly even with headphones on I could still hear the fan going off during certain games on the Pro. So glad this is no longer a concern.

Hallelujah!!! Honestly this may well be the thing I'm most excited about Aslong as its still this quiet (or near enough) after 3/4 years I'll be happy.

@get2sammyb Mine was the same with The Last of Us 2. I eventually put my pro on a cooling rack to see if it would help at all. I'm still not sure if it did.

@Jeremiah_Thor I'd also like to know this. We don't seem to have heard much about the feature either, not compared to how much we have about the DualSense for example. Other than late at night perhaps, it will always be surround sound that will be used so would be really good to know if there's an improvement as I felt alot of games in Ps4 era didn't make enough of surround sound capabilities.

How about the Watt usage between PS5 Fat and PS4 Pro ?

@Jeremiah_Thor It does support 7.1 surround sound. It will bring 3D audio to other devices in the future though.

I'm glad the fan noise isn't a problem anymore, it seems ps5 is dead silent compared to ps4 pro 😃

But, according to Mark Cerny, PS5 lead architect, the console will also be capable of delivering 3D audio through your regular set-up – whether it be television speakers, soundbars or surround sound systems". So by the sounds of it, probably is best with headphones but is utilized with every sound setup. Didn't know anything had been mentioned about it so my bad for asking a question i could've found the answer to myself.

I must be one of those lucky ones that has a perfectly working PS4 slim that doesn’t sound like a jet or maybe this is a PS4 pro thing!? and honestly this comparison is funny but pointless, the system is brand new it would be embarrassing if it sounded like a jet coming out of the box, give it a year to truly know if it’s quiet or not

Wait until games are pushing the PS5 to its limits then say its quiet. Or when the inevitable Slim reduces the heat sink and removes liquid cooling.

I hear my Pro even when I'm wearing my headphones. It's like a jet engine and that has been the case since the first day of purchase. Really excited for the PS5

As long as it's close as quiet as my one X, that would be amazing. That thing is silent.

For me this is the biggest upgrade. It's what made me move the the one X for multiplats. And as with @EquiinoxGII if the PS5 matches the one x I'm happy but in reality I expect it to be even quieter.

@GKO900 My day one PS4 Pro was a jet engine from the day I got it. The first 6 months or so run had a fan curve stepping from 0 to 100% in an instant. It was improved in later models. I ended up adding a little bleed resistor across the fan control wires to try and take the edge of it but if you bleed off to much it's a problem when high fan is required.

@graysoncharles I can't speak for Sony's 3D audio yet but if it is like Dolby Atmos it is nothing like like 7.1 surround. I have a prosumer level Atmos setup. It can produce the sound of a fly buzzing around your head or a bullet flying past an inch from your head. The difference is the sound does not just come from different directions but can be placed in a very precise 3D space. Giving each sound sample a x,y,z location for that moment in time.

Just to check, all the people with loud consoles did you ever clean them out? I used to clear my pro out every few month and it was never loud at all.

My original PS4 was loud and i heard the PS4 Pro gets loud too, but Sony did try and address this with later versions of the PS4 Pro. PS4 Pro version CUH-7200. I got one of these later versions and Sony definitely did fix the issue, my PS4 Pro is quite. While playing less demanding games you can hardly hear the console and that's trying to listen for it, more demanding games you can hear when trying to listen for it. So if you've got your volume up or headphones on I cannot hear my PS4 Pro, it is a night & day difference especially towards my original PS4 where it would drown out the sound coming from my TV and could hear it while wearing headphones.

My PS4 Pro first edition (CUH 71xx) makes the exact same level of noise...
And I cleaned it twice, although both times it wasn't really necessary, as it had very little dust inside.
And I ensured it has enough ventilation space while running. I even replaced the thermal paste twice, the second time with the Noctua compound that comes with one of their best coolers, NH-D14.
But only minimum improvements were obtained.
In 1080p close quarters games, like Bloodborne, it was pretty quiet, but in 4K + HDR in open world games it still took off like a jet engine.
Especially in some games menus, like AC Odyssey or God of War, the fan was louder in them than in the actual games. WTF was in those menus that the fan needed to spin so hard i'll never know...
Can't wait to follow that last scene guy's example, and finally play PS4 (and PS5) games in peace and quiet. Recycling it though, but same idea.

I’ll never forget the god of war menu, never. Recently genshin impact is pretty bad for fan noise. The 19th can’t come soon enough

I sold my black ps pro for around 180 but stated it does heat up and is nosiey as I previously brought it pre-owned from my local Game store. But I managed to grab a bargain and get a Last Of Us part 2 limited edition pro for £230 and now I can listen to my games in slience! I have it on a wall mount and it’s next to my window so it gets the right air ventilation!

I have a launch PS4 and a launch PS4 Pro.
Both consoles were noisy in a tight TV cabinet until I took the back off to let them breathe.

They both still heat up and sound loud during certain games especially recent AAA games such as TLOU2.

If you drag the consoles out and stand them vertically with lots of room for airflow it makes a huge difference.

I think the same will happen with PS5. If you store it horizontally in an enclosed TV stand it will heat up and the fan will get louder. And early titles are unlikely to push the CPU, GPU & SSD to their limits like later titles. We will see over time I guess.

My base PS4 was ridiculous for Last of Us 2 and Ghost. If i didn't have headphones i literally wouldn't have been able to hear what was happening. Only so loud i can put the tv

I don't know if I've just learned to tune it out, or if mine didn't have that problem, but I don't remember my PS4 (or later, my PS4Pro) making much noise. (It could also be that I've kept them in an open cabinet and they could breath) Still, I'm glad the PS5 will be quiet ☺

I legit thought my ps4 was going to break at times.

@DEDE1973 A jet engine? Have you ever stood next to a real jet when it's preparing for takeoff? PS4 is not even close to that. I will agree it's loud though. Didn't start off that way. I think years of stress on the system from graphically demanding games made it that way

My PS4 Pro fan is very loud playing any game, and is now taking to overheating and shutting down unexpectedly after an hour of grinding gameplay in Sekiro. Four times it has done it now. My console is definitely on its way out, so I am very glad to see that the PS5 is very quiet. I will be glad that the whole house doesn't know I've turned on my console to play now haha.

I went to turn off my PS4 and I couldn't find it in my cabinet. Upon Inspecting the surrounding area I noticed it hovering above my living room. Tho I should have known that cause there was a huge gust of wind blowing down upon me at the time... Lmao

Instead of using a speakers placement in 3D space for the direction of sound the Tempest Engine uses targeted frequencies to stimulate the parts of your ear that infer direction and distance. The theory is with the right profile it could replicate the soundscape of standing in the rain, the creak of a floorboard just behind you, the sound of an approaching vehicle to your left... the crunch of broken glass beneath your shoe and the delicate whisper of your long dead wife bidding you to return to Silent Hill...

I don’t bother playing my PS4 Pro at night anymore, it’s too loud and it even vibrates the room below it!

@nessisonett mine is so loud. Ive tried many fixes and nothing helps. Im not buying a ps5 at launch, i think ill wait a little while.

@Flaming_Kaiser Yep, I had to turn it off when I was watching IT. There was one bit where it whispered in your ear, Its ok with head phones but when in an open room and something is whispering in one ear then the other it totally creeped me out. 😂😂

@HMazzy111 same and after watching a DF video last night looks like a lot of ps4 games will be running at a locked 60 in it was hardlocked by the devs to run at 30.

No I won't, as I can't stand having anything on my head. It'll be connected to my hi-fi, like every system before it.

As for the PS4 Pro in the video... jesus, mine's never made a racket like that.
